Labor Economics and Industrial Relations

I'm Professor Elif Yüksel Oktay. I am the Head of the Department of Labor Economics and Industrial Relations at Yalova University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. Our department is one of the departments of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. We mainly cover and examine all issues related to social policy, human resources management and work life and engage our students in educational activities related to these issues. We include all courses in our curriculum aimed at preparing our students for the future such as Labor Economics, Social Policy, Social Security, Human Resources Management, Social Problems in the Global World, Law Courses, Individual Labor Law, Collective Labor Law, Commercial Law, as well as Organizational Behavior. In accordance with the curriculum of the department, our students also take computer courses. Therefore, they use computer laboratories for these courses. Internships are carried out on demand in our department. Students are supported in that regard. They have to complete a graduation project in their senior year for the graduation project course. At the end of the 1st semester, we determine which teacher they will work with first. They can graduate after completing their dissertations in the second semester, which is the last semester. Our dissertation is usually aimed at implementation. It focuses on labor and practices undertaken in public institutions and the private sector. If our department students meet the requirements, they can partake in exchange program in the universities we have contracted at home and abroad. Erasmus, Mevlana and Farabi Programs are available in our university. We hold events. Every year, students of the Department of Labor Economics and Industrial Relations in Turkey hold the Congress on Labor Economics and Industrial Relations. Students from each university are able to present and exchange information on topics of interest. Apart from that, sometimes we organize other events, too. Our students can also make presentations with their teachers. The postgraduate employment chances of our department students are quite high. They can work as experts and inspectors in the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the Ministry of Family and Social Services, the Turkish Business Institution (İşkur). They can work in all organizations and trade unions in the private sector, including the finance and banking sectors. In short, they can work in all fields where graduates of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences can work. I believe that the students who will choose our department will study with great pleasure throughout their education. Because we have courses mainly aimed at eliminating social problems. I believe that the students who will choose us will have a fun time learning about the subjects provided here. We teach about migration, women’s challenges in the labor force, the social security of employees and employers, and the relationship between them. If you like to read and do research, you will be successful. Yalova is generally preferred by students living in these cities because it is close to Istanbul, Bursa and Kocaeli. There are many transportation services, they can easily commute to the university. We have a large number of student clubs. I think they will have a pleasant time in terms of socializing.
